If you drive a modern diesel around town, there is a decent chance you have met the DPF light. It comes on, maybe the car goes into limp mode, a garage quotes you a frightening number for a new filter, and someone in the pub tells you to just get it removed. Most of that panic is avoidable, so here is what is actually going on.
What a DPF does, in one paragraph
The diesel particulate filter sits in your exhaust and traps soot so it does not come out of the tailpipe. It is designed to clean itself by burning that soot off at high temperature, a process called regeneration, which mostly happens on longer runs at steady speed. That single fact explains most DPF trouble: cars that only do short, stop-start trips never get hot enough for long enough, so the filter fills faster than it empties.
Why the light is on
The light usually means the filter is loaded beyond the point where the car can sort itself out, or that a regeneration keeps getting interrupted. Sometimes the filter is genuinely full. Just as often the real culprit is something else entirely: a failed pressure or temperature sensor, a stuck EGR valve, or heavy carbon build-up upstream. That is why guessing is expensive, and why we always start with proper diagnostics rather than assuming the worst.
What not to do
- Do not ignore it. A loaded DPF gets worse, limp mode follows, and a filter that could have been cleaned can end up damaged beyond saving.
- Do not have it removed or deleted. Removing a DPF is an automatic MOT failure and tampering with emissions equipment is an offence. It also makes the car very hard to sell honestly. We do not do it on road cars, full stop.
- Do not keep clearing the code and driving on. The light is a symptom. Clearing it does not touch the cause, which is why it keeps coming back.
How it actually gets fixed
The right fix depends on what the diagnostics show. A loaded filter can usually be brought back with a forced regeneration or a proper clean, which costs a fraction of replacement. A duff sensor is a cheap part. A stuck EGR or heavy carbon build-up usually responds to proper cleaning and diagnosis. Most DPF lights we see are not a dead filter. They are a £60 diagnosis away from a much smaller bill than the one you are dreading.
Keeping it from coming back
Once it is sorted, give the car what a DPF needs: a proper run every week or two, twenty minutes or so at steady speed, so it can regenerate. If your driving is genuinely all short trips, it is worth an honest conversation about whether a diesel suits how you use the car.
